Hiawassee, Georgia

North Georgia's Best-Kept Secret

Most people head to Blue Ridge or Helen for a mountain getaway. Those who find Hiawassee wonder why they didn't come sooner.

Hiawassee is the only mountain town in North Georgia that sits on a major lake. While Blue Ridge and Dahlonega have charm, they don't have 7,000 acres of calm water surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. That combination — mountains and lake — is what makes Tranquille Resort unlike any other cabin rental in the region.

The town itself is small and unhurried. You won't find bumper-to-bumper traffic or overpriced tourist shops. What you will find is a genuine mountain community, locally owned restaurants, and access to some of the best hiking, fishing, and fall foliage in the Southeast.

Brasstown Bald — Georgia's highest point — is 20 minutes away. The Appalachian Trail is 30 minutes. Helen's Bavarian village is a 40-minute day trip. And Atlanta is a straight 2-hour drive south.

How Hiawassee Compares

North Georgia's Most Underrated Mountain Town

Blue Ridge gets the Instagram attention. Helen gets the tourists. Hiawassee gets the repeat visitors who know what they're looking for.

Blue Ridge has a lovely downtown and plenty of cabin rentals, but it sits on a river — not a lake. Blue Ridge Lake exists, but there's no true lakefront resort experience like Tranquille. It's also consistently crowded on weekends and holidays.

Helen is fun for a day visit with its Bavarian-themed downtown, but it's a tourist town. Heavy weekend traffic, a narrow river instead of a lake, and a commercial feel that's hard to escape. Better as a day trip than a home base.

Dahlonega is beautiful wine country with excellent hiking access to the Appalachian Trail, but it's landlocked. Perfect for wine-and-hike getaways — not for lake days.

Hiawassee has something none of the others do: 7,050 acres of calm mountain lake water surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains on three sides, in a town that hasn't been overrun by tourism. Kayak in the morning, hike Brasstown Bald in the afternoon, and watch the sunset over the lake from your porch before dinner. That combination simply doesn't exist anywhere else in North Georgia.

FAQ

North Georgia Cabin Questions

How far is Tranquille Resort from Atlanta?

Are the cabins pet-friendly?
Yes! All 7 of our cabins are pet-friendly. Dogs and cats are welcome. Please select "Add a Pet" when making your reservation. Pets must be leashed outdoors and crated when left alone. Maximum of 2 pets per cabin, with exceptions available by request.

Is there cell service and Wi-Fi?
Yes, all cabins have free Wi-Fi and Smart TVs with streaming. Cell service in the Hiawassee area is generally good with most major carriers, though signal strength can vary in the mountains.
Where is the nearest grocery store?
Ingles Market in downtown Hiawassee is just 5 minutes away. There's also a Walmart Supercenter about 10 minutes south in Blairsville for larger shopping trips.
Can I rent the entire resort for a group?
Absolutely! All 7 cabins on nearly 3 acres of private lakefront. The full resort sleeps 30+ guests with multiple bed configurations. Perfect for weddings, family reunions, and corporate retreats. Contact us for full-resort pricing.
Are there lakefront cabin rentals in North Georgia?
Yes — Tranquille Resort offers 7 lakefront cabin rentals directly on Lake Chatuge in Hiawassee, GA. Unlike most North Georgia cabins that are in the woods with no water access, our cabins sit on 600+ feet of private shoreline with a two-level dock, boat ramp, and on-site kayak/paddleboard/pontoon rentals.
What is there to do at the cabins in North Georgia?
On-site you can kayak, paddleboard, fish from the dock, rent a pontoon boat, relax by the bonfire, or visit Amelia's Cafe. Nearby, you can hike Brasstown Bald (20 min), explore the Bavarian village of Helen (40 min), wine taste at Crane Creek Vineyards (10 min), visit Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds (5 min), or access the Appalachian Trail (30 min).
How much do cabin rentals cost in North Georgia?
Rates vary by season and cabin size. Our smaller cabins (studios and 1-bedrooms) start at lower price points, while The Lodge (3BR, sleeps 6) and The Lake House (2BR, 2.5BA) are ideal for groups. Check availability on our website for current rates. Booking direct through our site ensures you get the best price.
What is the best North Georgia mountain town for a cabin with lake access?
Hiawassee is the only major mountain town in North Georgia situated directly on a large lake — Lake Chatuge (7,050 acres). Blue Ridge, Helen, Dahlonega, and Ellijay all offer mountain cabin rentals, but none have the combination of mountain scenery and genuine lake access that Hiawassee provides. If lake swimming, kayaking, fishing, and pontoon boating are important to your trip, Hiawassee is the clear choice in Georgia.
How far are North Georgia cabin rentals from Atlanta?
Most North Georgia mountain destinations are 1.5 to 2.5 hours from Atlanta. Hiawassee is about 2 hours north via I-985 and US-129. Blue Ridge and Helen are closer at about 1.5 hours, but they're also busier and more congested on weekends. For a relaxed, lakefront experience within easy driving distance of Atlanta, Hiawassee offers the best combination of access and atmosphere.
Are there pet-friendly cabin rentals in the North Georgia mountains?
Yes — all 7 cabins at Tranquille Resort are pet-friendly. Dogs and cats are welcome with a $75 per-stay pet fee. Select 'Add a Pet' when booking. Pets must be leashed outdoors and crated when left alone in the cabin, with a maximum of 2 pets per cabin (exceptions available by request).
