Hiawassee, Georgia
Mountains and a Lake — 1.5 Hours Away
Chattanooga has the Tennessee River. Hiawassee has 7,500 acres of calm mountain water surrounded by the Blue Ridge. They're not the same thing.
Most Chattanooga residents have driven US-64 East at least once — through the Ocoee River Gorge to Ducktown and across the state line into Georgia. What many don't know is that just 30 minutes past that state line, tucked into the North Georgia highlands, is a 7,500-acre lake surrounded by mountains on every side.
Lake Chatuge is where Tranquille Resort sits — 7 standalone lakefront cabins on 600+ feet of private shoreline. You won't find this combination near Chattanooga: calm mountain water, a private dock, kayaks and pontoons on demand, and cabins that feel like a real retreat rather than a crowded rental.
The town of Hiawassee is small and unhurried. Brasstown Bald — Georgia's highest peak — is 20 minutes away. Crane Creek Vineyards is 10 minutes. And Helen's Bavarian village is a 40-minute day trip if you want something livelier. But most guests find they don't leave the property much.

Year-Round
Every Season Has Its Pull
Unlike Gatlinburg or Blue Ridge, Hiawassee stays uncrowded even in peak season. There's a good reason to visit every month of the year.
Spring
Mar – May
Wildflowers along the mountain trails and mild temps. Great for hiking and early paddling.
Summer
Jun – Aug
Full lake season. Pontoon cruises, kayaking, swimming, and long evenings on the porch.
Fall
Sep – Nov
The best fall foliage in North Georgia — cooler than Gatlinburg with far fewer crowds.
Winter
Dec – Feb
Fireplace cabins, misty mountain mornings, and total peace. The most underrated time to visit.
The Drive
Getting Here from Chattanooga
One of the best parts of this trip is the drive — especially the stretch through the Ocoee River Gorge.
Recommended Route from Chattanooga
Take US-64 East through Cleveland, TN and the Ocoee River Gorge to Ducktown/Copperhill. Cross into McCaysville, GA and continue south on US-76 to Hiawassee. The Ocoee corridor is one of the prettiest mountain drives in the South — plan extra time to stop along the river.
