Hiawassee, Georgia

Mountains and a Lake — 1.5 Hours Away

Chattanooga has the Tennessee River. Hiawassee has 7,500 acres of calm mountain water surrounded by the Blue Ridge. They're not the same thing.

Most Chattanooga residents have driven US-64 East at least once — through the Ocoee River Gorge to Ducktown and across the state line into Georgia. What many don't know is that just 30 minutes past that state line, tucked into the North Georgia highlands, is a 7,500-acre lake surrounded by mountains on every side.

Lake Chatuge is where Tranquille Resort sits — 7 standalone lakefront cabins on 600+ feet of private shoreline. You won't find this combination near Chattanooga: calm mountain water, a private dock, kayaks and pontoons on demand, and cabins that feel like a real retreat rather than a crowded rental.

The town of Hiawassee is small and unhurried. Brasstown Bald — Georgia's highest peak — is 20 minutes away. Crane Creek Vineyards is 10 minutes. And Helen's Bavarian village is a 40-minute day trip if you want something livelier. But most guests find they don't leave the property much.

FAQ

Questions from Chattanooga Visitors

How far is Tranquille Resort from Chattanooga?
Tranquille Resort is approximately 1.5 to 1 hour 45 minutes from Chattanooga, depending on your route. The most scenic option is US-64 East through the Ocoee River Gorge — a gorgeous mountain drive that delivers you directly into the North Georgia highlands. Distance is about 75 miles.
What's the best route from Chattanooga to Hiawassee?
The most popular route is US-64 East through Cleveland, TN and the Ocoee River corridor to Ducktown/Copperhill, then into McCaysville, GA. From there it's a scenic 30-minute drive south on US-76 to Hiawassee. It's one of the prettiest drives in the Southeast — mountain curves, river views, and almost no traffic.
What makes Tranquille different from cabins near Chattanooga?
Most cabins near Chattanooga are in the woods with no water access. Tranquille Resort sits directly on Lake Chatuge — 7,500 acres of calm mountain water — with 600+ feet of private shoreline, a two-level dock, and on-site kayak, paddleboard, and pontoon rentals. Mountains and lake together is hard to find anywhere in the region.
Is the drive from Chattanooga to Hiawassee scenic?
One of the best drives in the South. The Ocoee River Gorge stretch of US-64 is stunning — the road runs right alongside the river through a narrow mountain canyon. If you've ever paddled the Ocoee, you'll recognize the stretch. The final approach into Hiawassee through Union County and Towns County is equally beautiful, especially in fall.
Are the cabins pet-friendly?
Yes — all 7 cabins are pet-friendly. Dogs and cats are welcome. Select 'Add a Pet' when booking. Pets must be leashed outdoors and crated when left alone inside. Maximum of 2 pets per cabin with exceptions available on request.
What water activities are available on the lake?
Kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, GoBoats, and a pontoon boat are all available for rent through our on-site Amelia's Cafe. The resort's private dock and boat ramp are available to all guests. Lake Chatuge is a full-size recreational lake — 7,500 acres — with excellent fishing, swimming, and cruising.
Do the cabins have fireplaces?
Yes — The Red, Blue, Green, and White Cabins and The Lodge all have wood-burning fireplaces. Firewood is available for $10 per bundle. The Loft and Lake House don't have fireplaces but offer cozy open-concept layouts with lake views.
What's the best time of year for a trip from Chattanooga?
Fall is stunning — October foliage rivals anything you'll find near Chattanooga and the crowds are smaller than Gatlinburg or Blue Ridge. Summer is peak lake season: pontoon cruises, swimming, and long evenings on the porch. Winter is quiet and cozy with fireplaces and misty mornings. Spring brings wildflowers and mild hiking weather.
